Temistokles Adlawan or should i just say tem adlawan he is the author of the story “one day on the road” Tem Adlawan was born on Dec ,21 ,1930 in Naga Cebu. He is one of the major fictionists of cebu. He has written poetry, short stories, and novels, or subjects ranging from rural to urban his style varies from the collequial irreverent manner of his highly humorous stories to the fluent imagery and poetic evocation is thought- provoking narratives. late, Nov 17, 2009, he was an award winning author of cebu.He died at the age of 79 by drinking hemlock. I really like this story because it gives a lot of lesson that we should apply in our life because nowadays people live there life to the fullest and not minding what other people will think of them but i get them because life is short and we only live once so let’s live our life like it is the last day of our life but we shouldn’t forget that not all will understand us because whatever we want we should not forget other people because in the story they’re tricycle drivers so they should drive carefully and safely to their passenger’s destination or else it will cause a lot of trouble the author tells us to think first before doing such things. Before we regret things we won’t forget. I rate this story 10/10 because i was really shocked on how the author explains the story differently and on how he gives us knowledge about it and to think clearly on something whatever the situation were. I recommend this story because the author reached his goal. To give moral lesson to all of us. Let’s take care of our life because god gave us life to experience how beautiful his creation was
“An Earnest Parable” Book Review by: Buela, Janine Chloe

Hola! It’s me again, Chloe. Let me ask you something. Have you ever been to another country? How ’bout a province different from yours? Well, check out this story that I think you’ll find interesting.
“An Earnest Parable” caught my attention because of its oddity at first and this wonderful creation is written no other than by Merlinda Bobis, an award-winning Australian-Filipino writer who grew up in Albay, Philippines which figures prominently in her writing and performance. As a child her main interest was painting, but at age ten, she began writing poetry because “painting with words” was cheaper. She has published novels, short stories, dramas and poems, and even plays in Australia, Philippines, Spain, USA, Canada, and all other places around the world. For ten years she taught Literature and English at Philippine universities before coming to Australia in 1991 on a study grant and these, my dear reader, are just some of her achievements as a world-class writer. Her love for arts and poetry made her create the “An Earnest Parable”. Perhaps you’ll ask why and how.
So as I was saying earlier, what caught my attention is the story’s oddity. The story evolves around a Filipino chef who shared latik, an Australian couple who shared vegemite, an Italian butcher who shared the word bella (meaning beautiful), a Sri Lankan tailor who shared cardamom tea, and a Turkish baker who shared biscotti bread. Obviously, they are all migrants from around the world. They made their homes in a neighbourhood at Bessel Street. They pass a “tongue” to each other every time they get the chance to do it. Weird, right?
So that’s basically it. If you’ll just read the story and won’t try to dig deeper to it, you won’t really enjoy it that much. The tongue symbolizes “various languages and delicacies”. Bobis includes an additional dimension to it. She attributes the production of language to the “tongue” which also serves as the repository of the memory of taste and smell. She said that the tongue had an excellent memory that even when it had moved in a new mouth, it still evoked the breath of spices, sweets and syllables of the former host. The view that cultures, races, and ethnicities, particularly those of minority groups, deserve special acknowledgement of their differences within a dominant political culture is called multiculturalism and it was strongly seen throughout the story. It showed how flexible and diverse we are when it comes to adaptation of other cultures, traditions, and even language. What I love the most about the story is how it was constructed by the writer. I did not feel a dull moment while reading this because it was written creatively. You will really look forward on what will happen to this character or that character, this scene or that scene, and etc. I also admire Merlinda Bobis for her mind and courage to create such a wonderful work. If it wasn’t for all the hardships she experienced in life and if she looked at things in a negative way, her talent for writing won’t be discovered by the world. If there’s a part that I did not like is the part when I got bothered for imagining that they are passing a “tongue”. But nevertheless, it is an amazing story. It will teach us to respect every race, gender, nationality, and etc. Let us not be like others who laugh at the aetas and refuse to talk to Muslims because they are “terrorists” but instead, let us break the stigma. As a HUMSS student, I believe that equality in the society is important which is why I highly recommend this book to everyone and I’m giving it a 10 out of 10. “An Earnest Parable” could become an eye-opener for us to change how the world works and will encourage us to just love and respect one another despite our differences.
“One Day on the Road” Book Review by: Angeles, Renee Isabel
According to my research, Tomistokles Adlawan is the author of the text “One day on the Road”, he is a contemporary Cebuano poet who often writes with irreverent humor usually associated with Cebuano folk. Some of his writings expresses a greater sensitivity to gender issues. His short story is “Ang Gidak-on sa Dagat”, including his poetry “Lili (peep) 1987″, and of course the text, “One Day on the Road.” The text is originated from Cebu. The story is established to particularly tell people know the consequences of doing an action without caution. The values was shown in the end once it’s all a regret, it showed that you should not let pride take over you, be humble. People will always make decision without caution and without thinking before doing an action. The story One day on the road was about Sherwin and Miguel who were both tricycle drivers. In the plot, they both raced for fares and speed. Sherwin was ahead of Miguel, specially on the road. Miguel decided to give up on picking passengers. He saw Sherwin ahead of him and tried to catch up. As he tried to overtake as he realized his tricycle was on the wrong side of the road. Then the accident suddenly happened. What I like a about the book is that it gives moral to the people who are so ignorant, and that people who should do what is right next time and so I recommend this book. What I don’t like about the text is that how can they decide on what they should do for the next period of time. I would rate the book 8-10 because there’s a lot of different stories in the internet and it’s a little bit different from the book, somehow the story is good and it shows a lot of values.

One Day on the Road was written by Adlawan because he wants to spread awareness of how every actions we do has a consequence. He wants us to realize that some of us creates their own storms then get upset when it rains.
In One Day on the Road the story focuses with 2 tricycle drivers namely, Miguel and Sherwin. One day as Miguel dropped of his last passenger, he immediately goes back to the stop to fetch another passenger. As he goes back he saw Sherwin driving his tricycle faster than him. Miguel thought that Sherwin was challenging to a race on who gets more passengers and who is the fastest between them. With that Miguel got into an accident where he lost control of his tricycle which swung and lurched to the side of the road.
After reading the text, I noticed that the author used present tense as he tells the story. For me, The story is narrated in present tense because it allows us, the readers to convey a character’s change as it happens. When a story is written in present tense, we are there with the narrator as he changes the mood of the story. For me Miguel really knows the basics of being a tricycle driver but he lacks on knowledge about the real purpose of being one. Because I know for myself that a purpose of a tricycle driver is to drive your passenger safely at his/her destination and not to have a competition between other drivers. We can also see that as the story goes by, Miguel feels like Sherwin is one of his competitors since Sherwin drives faster than him. The last part of the text is the one that I liked the most where he said “Never again!” because Miguel’s words stated that he won’t let his pride take over his mind and feelings ever again which was the purpose of the author to teach us, readers a lesson. I would give this text a 10/10 because the way he wrote this was indeed great and he used a common scenario that we usually see in our daily lives. I would recommend this text to my dad because I sometimes see him easily getting mad or angry when we are in the car which may be a cause of accident. I want him to also learn that he should stay calm every time that he is driving.

“The Green Sanctuary” Book Review by: Buela, Janine Chloe

Hello there! It’s me, Chloe. Let me guess. Maybe you’re thinking that I’ll be posting another same ol’ blog post about random happenings and stuff but hey, this one’s different. It’s about this book that I find really amusing yet factual at the same time.
“The Green Sanctuary” is written by the Filipino author, Antonio Enriquez, who was born and raised in Zamboanga. He’s a two-time Palanca Memorial Award for Literature Grand Prize winner in 1982 for his first novel “Surveyors of Liguasan Marsh” and again in 1993 for hist third novel “Subanons”. He also won first prize for the short story category in 1973 for his work “Spots on their wings” and third prize for the same category for “The Icon” in 1969. Tha Palanca Award is considered the Philippines’ most prestigious award for literature. These are just some of his achievements as a writer though. He passed away on June 2014 in Cagayan de Oro city at the age of 77. The literary text originated in Pikit, Cotabato. When I finished reading the book, I realized why it was entitled “The Green Sanctuary”. It’s because of the pleasing environment of Mindanao which is the setting of the story. Aside from that, I can really say that Mindanao has much more to show when it comes to their culture because of the way how practice of the Moros was discussed in the story.
It started in a Spanish ship that dropped an anchor in Palanggi river in Pikit. Pikit is a small town in Cotabato wherein commercial buses are not allowed inside their place. These commercial buses stop near Pikit so the driver could drop his passengers. These passengers walk bare-foot until they reach the nearest barrio in Pikit to buy slippers or any footwear. Perhaps you’ll ask what happens to the commercial bus that enters their town. They destroy the commercial bus that enters their place. There was even an instance wherein a 4-year-old kid was left inside and unfortunately, they got the kid killed. Also by 6pm, stores and other public places should be closed. By this time, residents of Pikit are not allowed to go outside of their house. Whoever disobeys this law gets caught by the policemen who turn into civilians during curfew hours. There is only one man who is allowed to roam around Pikit during curfew hours and that is Datu Mantel. He is a very strict leader, almost like a dictator. They also mentioned on how the Moros including Datu Mantel watched in a movie house that shows the movie of Fernando Poe Jr. as the protagonist wherein FPJ killed a native or a Moro so Datu Mantel got fired up and he took out his gun and shoot the whole place out due to the feeling of being attacked and offended by the movie.
So that’s basically it. Honestly, I love every part of the story. What’s not to love about it, right? It enlightened my mind regarding social issues that is why I’m giving it a 10 out of 10. I would recommend the book to the readers out there who are a fond of nature and interested in learning different cultures of different places. It seems like Antonio Enriquez really loves to discuss social issues and realistic events in his books rather than fiction, romance, teen-fiction, and other genres that are high demand in the market during that time and I admire him for that. For me, books like “The Green Sanctuary” are the ones that need much more attention. Remember that an eco-friendly world is a wonderful world. Imagine what will our future generations be if we ignore the fact that Mother Earth needs to be cured. Also, world peace. It’ll be much more enjoyable if we love and communicate with each other instead of spreading hate and anger within other race, culture, nationality, gender, and etc.
The Green Sanctuary by: Juan, Colleen Gabrielle
Antonio Reyes Enriquez is the great author who wrote the “surveyors of the liguasa marsh” or also known as the “Green Sanctuary”. Sanctuary means “Safe heaven” he was Born and raised in Zamboanga City He has been published in his homeland, the Philippines, and regarded as the first Filipino fictionist writing in his homeland to break into foreign publication with his short story collection, “Dance a White Horse to Sleep and Other Stories,” and Carlos Palanca grand prize “Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh”both published by UQP, Queensland, Australia, the latter in 1977. His short stories have been translated to Korean, German, French, and Chabacano.i t was his fearful and unforgettable experience in Liguasan Marsh in Maguindanao that likely started his career as a novelist Liguasan Marsh was the setting of his first novel, “Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh.” However, his “happiest and most memorable times” in his grandfather’s land in a coastal village of Labuan, west of Zamboanga city, which encouraged him to write about farmers, fishermen, and the common folks. The Green Sanctuary is set in Pikit, Cotabato the things that I won’t forget in the story is where vehicles is not allowed to pass or go near pikit. These vehicles will go to the nearest bus stop to drop the passengers inside the vehicle. And the passengers will walk barefooted until they reach pikit to make this story short in pikit cotabato was a closed city were no one can go out and go inside maybe it’s for safety purposes to avoid any incident i rate this story 9/10 because it gives a lot of knowledge to know more about different places and how they manage and the fact that this story is very interesting and impressive to know such things so I’m giving a heads up to this story
The Green Sanctuary by: Angeles, Renee Isabel
As of my research, Antonio Reyes Enriquez is the author of several books of short stories and novels. He was born in Barangay Labuan, Zamboanga city in 1936. He was educated at a local Jesuit school in Zamboanga. Enriquez later did various jobs like writing a news and other features for various news papers and magazines. He also joined a surveying company in Cotabato where his experience provided him settings and characters for his novel. The story is established about the South of the city of Cotabato lies the famed Liguasan marsh, on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. It is probable that the author who worked for a time with a surveying company in the province of Cotabato has taken from actual experiences. The values that are shown in the story is that being independent regardless of what’s really happening in real life. To summarize, the story is opposite with the title, it’s violence within the whole story. People are being controlled with the life they didn’t meant to happen. People will think that it will always be sa fe environment. The Green Sanctuary is a good book considering that it’s about the cultures in different places, or probably around the world. Sanctuary means “safe haven”, and Green is just added because of it’s environment. Knowing that the title is planned to be “Sanctuary” only, but it’s suggested to be “The Green Sanctuary.” This book is known to be inspired or came from the story “Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh”. Knowing that the story of The Green Sanctuary is connected to the setting of “Madawag na kagubatan ng Mindanao” and the role of the environment in the story and the “Culture of the Moro.” This shows how greedy he is, how he really needs the power which is really unnecessary. What also caught my attention is that the bus would stop at the nearest town near pikit because they wont go any farther in pikit, maybe because of some privacy in their town in pikit. I would honestly rate this 9/10, it’s because the story really got me, but It saddens me how people would just do things for their own favor and victory.
“Green Sanctuary” Book Review by: Hernandez, Nathan Izach E.

Antonio Reyes Enriquez is a filipino author of short stories and novels. He was born in Zamboanga city in 1936. Enriquez won many awards for his passion on writing. The short stories and novels of Enriquez were published mostly here in the Philippines. The author’s work are all based on different tales of the Philippines with his own perspective as a Zamboangueño. Here are some of his works:
Subanons

The Unseen War

Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh

The Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh is a work of Enriquez that was later on changed into Green Sanctuary requested by N.V.M. Gonzalez.
Green Sanctuary is set in Pikit, Cotabato where commercial buses or any other commuting vehicles are not allowed to stop by or be near Pikit. Instead, the passengers will be dropped of to the nearest town in Pikit and will walk barefooted until they reach Pikit where they can buy slippers(weird right?). If any commuting vehicles who stopped in Pikit, the Moros will deflate the tires with their wooden clubs, smashed the lights and windshields to smithereens until the skeleton of the vehicle is the only thing left. At six o’clock every evening, the sari-sari stores and carinderias along the road should be closed. No one should be seen walking after this hour. Only Datu Mantel is the only one that is allowed to be outside that time. One night a drunkard lost his way home, and on the main street Datu Mantel immediately shot him with his 45-calibre handgun.
In Green Sanctuary Datu Mantel also stole the role of the chief of police even without an appointment from the governor.
After reading the Green Sanctuary, the part that caught my attention the most is that if a bus or any transport vehicle stopped in Pikit, the Moros will deflate the vehicle’s tires with their wooden clubs and smashed the lights and windshields to small pieces until the skeleton of the bus is the only one left. This caught my attention because this scene gave me a vibe of a series called “The 100”, which is one of my favourite tv series of all time. Another interesting part of the story is when the Datu stole the role of the chief of police without an appointment from the governor. In the line “Now I am the chief of police” The Datu showed his hunger for power. An evidence of this is when the Datu is the only one who is allowed to walk around the main road after six o’ clock every evening, and every one should notbe seen outside because if they are caught or seen by the Datu himself they will be shot. The story is in third person view because based on my research Antonio’s works are usually based on Zamboanga where he also lives. I gave this book a 9/10 because like I said I like the story because it is very interesting can like I said, it is similar to my favourite series. If I were to recommend this story to someone, I would recommend it to my grandfather because he really loves to read stories that happened in the past or somehow related to the past because he believes that history repeats itself and history may be the solution if a problem or a situation comes up.
