“One Day on the Road” Book Review by: Angeles, Renee Isabel

According to my research, Tomistokles Adlawan is the author of the text “One day on the Road”,  he is a contemporary Cebuano poet who often writes with irreverent humor usually associated with Cebuano folk. Some of his writings expresses a greater sensitivity to gender issues. His short story is “Ang Gidak-on sa Dagat”, including his poetry “Lili (peep) 1987″, and of course the text, “One Day on the Road.”  The text is originated from Cebu.  The story is established to particularly tell people know the consequences of doing an action without caution. The values was shown in the end once it’s all a regret, it showed that you should not let pride take over you, be humble. People will always make decision without caution and without thinking before doing an action. The story One day on the road was about Sherwin and Miguel who were both tricycle drivers. In the plot, they both raced for fares and speed. Sherwin was ahead of Miguel, specially on the road. Miguel decided to give up on picking passengers. He saw Sherwin ahead of him and tried to catch up. As he tried to overtake as he realized his tricycle was on the wrong side of the road. Then the accident suddenly happened. What I like a about the book is that it gives moral to the people who are so ignorant, and that people who should do what is right next time and so I recommend this book. What I don’t like about the text is that how can they decide on what they should do for the next period of time. I would rate the book 8-10 because there’s a lot of different stories in the internet and it’s a little bit different from the book, somehow the story is good and it shows a lot of values.

The Green Sanctuary by: Angeles, Renee Isabel

As of my research, Antonio Reyes Enriquez is the author of several books of short stories and novels. He was born in Barangay Labuan, Zamboanga city in 1936. He was educated at a local Jesuit school in Zamboanga. Enriquez later did various jobs like writing a news and other features for various news papers and magazines. He also joined a surveying company in Cotabato where his experience provided him settings and characters for his novel. The story is established about the South of the city of Cotabato lies the famed Liguasan marsh, on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao. It is probable that the author who worked for a time with a surveying company in the province of Cotabato has taken from actual experiences. The values that are shown in the story is that being independent regardless of what’s really happening in real life. To summarize, the story is opposite with the title, it’s violence within the whole story. People are being controlled with the life they didn’t meant to happen. People will think that it will always be sa fe environment. The Green Sanctuary is a good book considering that it’s about the cultures in different places, or probably around the world. Sanctuary means “safe haven”, and Green is just added because of it’s environment. Knowing that the title is planned to be “Sanctuary” only, but it’s suggested to be “The Green Sanctuary.” This book is known to be inspired or came from the story “Surveyors of the Liguasan Marsh”. Knowing that the story of The Green Sanctuary is connected to the setting of “Madawag na kagubatan ng Mindanao” and the role of the environment in the story and the “Culture of the Moro.” This shows how greedy he is, how he really needs the power which is really unnecessary. What also caught my attention is that the bus would stop at the nearest town near pikit because they wont go any farther in pikit, maybe because of some privacy in their town in pikit. I would honestly rate this 9/10, it’s because the story really got me, but It saddens me how people would just do things for their own favor and victory.
